Automation QA Tester

Product & Engineering · Auckland, AKL
Department Product & Engineering
Employment Type Full-Time
Minimum Experience Experienced

Due to growth and expansion into new product areas, Wellington are expanding our software team. This has created an exciting opportunity for a senior-level tester to join the team.

About the role:

Based at our headquarters in Albany, Auckland (although with the opportunity for semi- remote), you will be building and operating a test automation suite which enables the growth of our SaaS IoT ecosystem. This ecosystem uses a mix of mobile, cloud and web technologies to collect and cleanse IoT data from millions of globally dispersed IoT devices, turn it into useful business insights, and visualize these insights. You will be working with engineers from a wide range of disciplines and engaging with complex technologies and challenges – one of the characteristics of IoT is the sheer breadth of the technology stack, and Wellington are world leaders in the technology of mobile-driven ad-hoc Bluetooth networks and have one of the world’s largest industrial IoT deployments.

About you:

  • You are an experienced automation tester with the capability to design, stand up, and operate an automated test environment and stack without a more senior person to back you up
  • You are happy to also get stuck in and conduct manual testing, either as a precursor to automation or to help other testers out when the going gets tough
  • You have a solid understanding of the issues involved in testing across a wide technology stack, including both API-driven and hardware-in-the-loop Ideally you will have some sort of hardware or firmware experience in your background, rather than pure comp.sci, and if not, you’ll be someone who finds the idea of hardware impacting your tests challenging rather than problematic.
  • You have the capability and inclination to mentor more junior testers to help them acquire your level of skills, and more junior developers and BAs to help them create more test-friendly requirements and code
  • You are persistent, detail oriented, and get a buzz out of finding new and better ways to break things
  • You have the courage of your convictions and aren’t afraid to stand up and say “this shall not pass!”
  • You are an effective communicator in both written and verbal English (this certainly doesn’t mean you need to be a native speaker, but we have a lot of people who aren’t native speakers and you need to be able to communicate in English with someone who has a different mother tongue than you)

About Wellington

Wellington is a Kiwi hi-tech success story. We are a NZ owned and headquartered company, but with a global footprint and global- scale customers, so we offer the best of both worlds – lightweight process and a chance to engage with senior leadership and influence the direction of the company, but also the chance to work on large-scale solutions.

As well as the usual competitive salary package, we offer an abnormally high degree flexibility, a chance to work with a small, high-capability team on genuinely interesting work at the convergence of digital with physical, and the opportunity for your work to have some durability rather than the “here today gone tomorrow” of much software. We’re not going to kid you that every day is excitement – like all jobs, some days it’s just a job – but IoT is a new field, and many of the issues are not solved ones. You could be part of solving them.

IoT is an increasingly hot field: McKinsey & Co have called it “one of the fundamental trends underlying the digital transformation of business and the economy”. The skills you acquire at Wellington are likely to become increasingly saleable over time.
